​Chemical Composition of Steel

The tube manufacturers normally have a practice to sample check the material to ensure that inspection results mentioned in the test certificate are correct.

At Purva this is done by Cast Product test which conforms to IS 1239 (Part 1):2004.

​Dimensional Inspection

Referred standards and generally accepted measurement techniques are followed.

Usually it relates to outside and inside diameter, wall thickness, width/height/corner radius (For SHS/RHS), ovality, squareness, eccentricity, fin height as applicable.

Checking involves measuring instruments like micrometers, vernier calipers, bevel protector, snap gauges, steel tape,etc. Normally minimum OD world be revealed at 90° of position recording maximum OD value. 

Given below are the test we perform at Purva.

  1. Outside Dimension
  2. Inside Dimension
  3. Thickness
  4. Length

​Mechanical Properties

This kind of test can also be called as destructive test wherein the manufactured tube is tested for its hardness,impact and tensile test to verify if it falls under the given standard mention in IS 3601-2006.

  • Tensile Test 

Suitable Tensile or Universal Testing Machine (UTM) of appropriate range, least count and accuracy to be used. Calibration of such machine is done in accordance with IS-3601-2006.

At Purva the following Tensile Test is carried out :-

  • Hardness Test

This test is done to determine the metal's resistance to the netration of a non-deformable ball or cone.The tests determine the depth with such a ball or cone will sink into the metal, under a given load, within specified period of time. 

  • Impact Test

Materials behave quite differently when they are loaded suddenly than when they are loaded more slowly as in tensile testing.Impact Tests are applied not only to measure the energy absorption capacity of the material subjected to sudden loading,but also to determine the transition temperature from ductile to brittle behavior. 

​Technological Tests

There are a number of tests that are done under these as given below :-
  • Bent Test 

Bend Test is applicable for welded tubes manufactured for different applications and specifications. The tubes shall be bent cold, by means of a tube bending machine round a grooved former having groove radius specified in the appropriate specification.The tube shall show no sign of cracking during the test.

  • Flattening Test 

This test is carried on a hydraulic press of a suitable tonnage with flow control valve to control the ram speed. This test is gives a fair evaluation of the weld area ductility and can alert for the presence of bond line defects.

  • Drift Expansion/Flanging

 This is one of the most least expensive and most popular tests.This is also performed on hydraulic press. A piece of tube is  approx 100mm long cut from one end shall be expanded in cold condition, by means of a smooth conical mandrel having an included angle of 30° or 45° or 60° until outside diameter of the tube at the mouth has been increased by not less than the percentage specified in the appropriate specification.The tube should show no sign of crack or flaw as a result of this test.

  • Crush Test  

A piece of tube approx equal length to 1.5 times the diameter, cut from one end, with the ends parallel and square with its axis, shall be crushed cold, lengthwise until its length reduce by not less than the percentage of the original length specified in the speification.The tube shall show no sign of crack or flaw as a result of this test.

  • Ring Tensile Test 
This specification specifies the method of test to reveal surface and internal defects by subjecting parted ring test sample to strain until fracture occurs. 

​Leakage Tests

We perform Eddy Current Testing in this.

Eddy Current Testing : It is most commonly non-destructive testing method for on-line and off-line testing of major range of welded and seamless steel tubes.When a conductive material is placed within a test coil and thus into magnetic field, eddy currents are induced within the material.Defects in tube under inspection cause distortions in eddy current flow and this distorted flow results in an impedance change in the test coil. The change in impedance in turn causes and unbalanced small voltage of signal. 

​Non Destructive Tests

Hydrotest :This test is commonly applied for tubes and pipes for pressure applications or for transporting liquid or gaseous products. This is also known as one of the Non Destructive Test methods that are available.
